Gord Lau has been nominated to the DPAC Executive by the Trafalgar PAC. His nomination will be voted on at our AGM on June 20, 2019. In his own words:
My name is Gordon Lau. I have children at Trafalgar Elementary school in grade 3 and 6. I was co-chair at my school's PAC for three years and have been a DPAC officer since last fall. I am looking to continue on as a DPAC officer.
I became involved with the DPAC with 2017, when our school discovered that we were one of five French immersion schools to lose a kindergarten class. Communications from the VSB regarding the changes were only provided as an afterthought in response to parental pressure and were not understood by parents. I worked with the DPAC to better understand the root causes behind the changes and to ensure that the parent voice was heard at the VSB on behalf of all the schools impacted.
I joined the DPAC executive in the fall of 2018, with the intent to help engage with the VSB and represent the concerns of Vancouver parents and students. Since then, I've learned a lot about public education in BC and at the VSB in particular. Parents, as represented by PACs and DPAC, share responsibility for our education system. The DPAC should be a force for politely but firmly pointing the VSB towards increased transparency, meaningful consultation and better communication with school communities. Progress has been made but more needs to be done. I have the knowledge, attitude and desire to continue moving the conversation forward.
Thank you for your consideration in electing me to continue on the DPAC executive.
